Routine Analytical Services
Micro-Scan Services, Inc. uses an HP 5890 GC with an
HP5970A Mass Selective Detector to provide GC/MS services.
The mass range is from 2 to 800 AMU. The sensitivity is
dependent on the compound of interest, but the equipment
specification is for a 20:1 signal-to-noise ration trace with
1 nanogram (10-9 grams) of methyl stearate
delivered to the detector. This translates to about 100
nanograms injected when using a split-mode injector. Data
can be obtained in the full scan mode to provide the mass
spectra of peaks or, for increased quantitative precision and
sensitivity, in single ion monitoring (SIM) mode, where for
known materials, up to eight different M/e values can be
monitored.
APPLICATIONS
- GENERAL GC/MS FOR MAJOR COMPONENTS ANALYSIS
- We can analyze gases and liquids or solids with volatile
components. The sample size will vary with analytical
requirements from several milliliters for a gas sample to
milligrams of material for liquids and solids.
- MONITORING OF INCOMING RAW MATERIALS
-
- We can provide analysis of raw materials provided by your
suppliers. Contracts for continuing analyses can result in
substantially lower prices.
- CONFIRMATION OF GC ANALYSES
- Frequently, a laboratory monitoring processes by GC alone
my encounter unknown peaks. If provided with a GC trace from
your instrument, along with a description of the column,
instrumental conditions used, and identification of known
components, we can economically provide fast turnaround on
mass spectra of the unknown components. The service includes
matching of the spectra to the NBS mass spectral
database.
- STATIC HEADSPACE ANALYSIS
- Analysis of volatiles in a sealed container at normal or
elevated temperatures.
- COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
- Extractions and separations on commercial products
followed by GC/MS can be used to maintain competitive
positions by determining changes in product compositions and
new materials in your market. Analysis of copycat products
can help determine if your patents are being infringed, and
the data can be used to support legal action.
THINGS WE DON'T DO
- Environmental analysis, hazardous waste determinations,
water quality, clinical samples, or illegal drugs. We can
provide names of certified laboratories for environmental and
hazardous waste work if you need that service.
